Viking Turkey Burgers

One of the first things I ever cooked when I was first living on my own was this Viking Turkey Burger Recipe I found on It’s so simple and so delicious! I was in college when I first made this and broiling meat was my version of fancy. It’s the perfect alternative to making a juicy burger without firing up the grill (which I still am intimidated to do). Ten years later, (GULP!) I still whip these up because it’s hard to beat delicious and easy to make!

The best thing about this recipe is the number of ingredients are so few and are pantry staples that I really only have to worry about grabbing the ground turkey, some buns and any fixings for the burger. I never used horseradish in a recipe before this or since with the exception of making shrimp cocktail sauce, but it’s a really nice and mild flavor. You can’t taste the kick once it’s mixed in and cooked. Ryder ate an entire one of these viking burgers and didn’t notice the flavor. I love the Morehouse Prepared Horseradish and at $3/jar (2 pack for 5.99) it’s staple I always keep one of in the fridge and a backup in the pantry.

After mixing the ingredients (don’t forget to remove your jewelry first!) roll it into one giant ball and then break it into four quadrants and roll each section into a somewhat equal sized ball. Flatten and shape each ball into about a 1/2 inch thick patty and plop onto a baking sheet.

I love these Miu Baking non stick silicon sheets which make clean up a breeze. They can be easily cleaned with soap and water and reused so I don’t have to worry about wasting and cutting up parchment paper. They come in a three pack including a mini size that fits perfectly in the toaster oven.

Preheat your oven to broil and when ready, place 6″ from broiler and cook for four minutes on each side. Do NOT add cheese until you’ve already cooked and pulled these out of the oven to cool. I’ve learned the hard way, the cheese under the broiler melts right off and ends up like a pool of cheese surrounding the patty rather than atop it.

Some of our favorite toppings are avocado, sharp cheddar, lettuce, red onion, pickles and this Sriracha aioli. I skip the buns and wrap them in Boston living lettuce and the flavors melt in my mouth! I recommend serving along side sweet potato fries. The burgers are so healthy, I practically deserve something with a little sin involved. French fries are the perfect compliment!

Ingredients for Burger Pattys

  • 1lb. ground Turkey
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. horseradish
  • 1 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Dijon-style mustard
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Additional items/toppings

  • Buns
  • Cheese
  • Avocado
  • Onion
  • Lettuce
  • Pickles


  1. Preheat oven to broil.
  2. Mix all ingredients for burger patty. Roll into on large bowl and divide into four somewhat equal sections.
  3. Roll each section into a ball and flatten to form a 1/2 inch patty.
  4. Broil six inches from heat for 4 minutes each side.
  5. Let cool slightly before adding cheese.
  6. Assemble burgers to your liking.
