Built Bars – Review and Flavor Breakdown

Update: I’ve updated the flavor breakdown with the newest flavors through October 2020. Recently Built Bar wiped out their inventory, got new equipment which assembles their bars using technology previously used to create candy bars instead of traditional protein bar production. This makes for an extra smooth and creamy bar. With the change, they’ve updated their formula, increasing protein in each bar. You guys – they nailed it! These are INCREDIBLE!!

I’m only including bars that are current permanent flavors available on builtbar.com. Additionally, since I previously touted these bars as being allergy friendly, I’m noting those that contain nuts. Built bar was excited to roll these out since they had to build a separate facility for these ones to keep the original line nut free and safe.

A few weeks ago I discovered Built Bars – my new favorite protein snack! I kept seeing the bars pop up on my instagram feed, specifically with comments about how much they taste like Almond Joy candy bars, but pack 17 – 19g of protein and calories ranging from 130 – 180 pre bar. Sounds too good to be true, right? After a couple weeks of having Almond Joy cravings, I was checking out at the grocery store waiting in line when I spotted Almond Joy bars and I started salivating. I’m talking drool dangling out of my mouth salivating. I have no idea how I made it out of the store without buying one, but as soon as I hopped in my car I got on Built Bars website to place my first order for their sample box.

A little breakdown on some of the things I loved seeing Built Bar call out on their website:

  • 130 – 180 calories
  • 17 – 19g protein
  • 4g fat
  • 13g carbs (5 net)
  • 4 – 5g sugar
  • Sweetened with erythritol and glycerin
  • 6g fiber
  • Gluten Free
  • No artificial Flavoring or Coloring
  • No artificial preservatives
  • No GMO

Now I just want to note, there is nothing wrong with eating an occasional almond joy bar. After all, they are gluten free. In fact, I’ve been known to steal the mini size out of Ryder’s halloween bucket (Shhhh!!), but I’ve got one hell of a sweet tooth and grabbing one bar at the grocery store checkout could easily turn into a daily habit, especially since I frequent the grocery store almost daily.

A few days after the grocery store/drooling incident, a built bar combo pack with 6 flavors arrived in the mail and I got to try my first bite of HEAVEN!!! It was love at first bite the second the raspberry chocolate creme bar hit my tounge. These are unlike any protein bar I’ve ever had. They taste much more like a marshmallow than a chalky protein bar (although, I happen to enjoy that texture, too). They are creamy and the perfect after dinner treat to curb my sweet tooth.

I posted about it on instagram and it turns out, a lot of my followers are ahead of the game and have also experienced this heavenly product. For those who have, there was all kinds of back and forth on which flavor takes the lead and how we most prefer each flavor – room temp, fridge temp or frozen. A couple people even suggested microwaving for 20 – 30 seconds, but I found it made it much chewier and I prefer the soft gooeyness of the bar.

After tasting a couple more flavors, I was hooked. I immediately ordered a large sample box so I could try all the flavors and promised you all a flavor review. If you are new to built bars, I recommend you try the sample box. Or, if you love a specific type of flavor, Builtbar sells flavors by the case or the option to customize your box with flavors of your choice.

See below for my flavor breakdown. Ready to order your own box? Use this link or enter the code RMB10 at checkout for 10% off your order. Full disclosure: I earn a small commission for using my code, but I would recommend these without getting any kick back and only recommend products I truly LOVE!

Listed from favorite to least:

Strawberry

  • I could eat this bar every single day! Some days I have one in the am and another for that evening sweet tooth.
  • So soft and fluffy on the inside with a creamy chocolate coating.
  • This one tastes like strawberries. Nothing artificial tasting here.
  • The perfect level of sweetness.

Raspberry

  • My original love at first bite and I was relieved to see the new formula is even better!!
  • Tastes like a chocolate truffle combined with a fluffy marshmallow.
  • Such a unique alternative to a traditional protein bar.
  • Try chopping these up and stuffing raspberries or topping over a greek yogurt bowl.

Cookies and Cream

  • Oh. My. God. This makes my tongue happy.
  • The perfect blend of chocolate and vanilla, though I wouldn’t associate it with cookies.
  • So fluffy and creamy.
  • Much more of a mild flavor than some of the others. Great for breakfast.

Chocolate Coconut

  • The OG. This is the original flavor that changed the standard of protein bars.
  • Taste like an almond joy.
  • Perfect amount of sweetness. Curbs my sweet tooth, but doesn’t have an overpowering taste.
  • I could eat two of these back to back.
  • Tastes amazing sliced up and popped in the freezer or room temp.

Mint Brownie

  • Tastes like an Andes Mint.
  • Amazing out of the freezer. Try slicing this one up and popping in the freezer. Grab a couple slices for an after dinner treat.
  • Super refreshing

Lemon Almond Cheesecake (Contains Nuts)

  • I love this one. It’s such a unique flavor, I can’t compare it to anything Ive ever tasted.
  • Very marshmallowy and soft.
  • Nice texture with real almond chunks.
  • Chocolate is a great compliment with the lemon.

Peanut Butter Brownie

  • Theres a lot happening in this bar and I’m here for it all.
  • Great texture. Reminds me of a gooey brownie.
  • Great blend of peanut butter and brownie – I can taste it all. This is the perfect ay to curb a chocolate craving.

Peanut Butter (Contains Nuts)

  • Great texture.
  • Chunks of actual peanuts.
  • Reminds me of a Snickers bar with peanut butter instead of caramel.

Banana Nut Bread (Contains Nuts)

  • Great amount of seasoning.
  • Good texture. I can actually taste the real walnuts.
  • No artificial aftertaste or flavor.

Apple Almond Crisp (Contains nuts!)

  • Overall, I like this one. The flavor is unique.
  • I pick up some tropical undertones, specifically pineapple, which is great, but I’m not tasting apple.
  • Good mix of chocolate and fruit.

Carrot Cake with Walnuts (Contains Nuts)

  • Chunks of real walnuts.
  • Definitely a dessert bar.
  • Very fluffy and wonderful texture
  • At first bite, it’s seasoned perfectly. I can really taste the cinnamon and nutmeg, but then the chocolate flavor overtakes it all.
  • I’m not getting the carrot flavor, but more of a well spiced chocolate bar.
  • Overall, I like this one, but wouldn’t call it a carrot cake bar.

Orange

  • Nice combo of chocolate and orange.
  • Taste like the orange chocolate candy they sell during the holiday season.
  • This one is my husbands favorite. I order these by the case for him.

Coconut Almond (Contains Nuts)

  • Yummy – taste very similar to the regular coconut bar.
  • Good blend of coconut and almond.
  • Good texture – real shredded almonds.

Cherry Garcia

  • Good flavor.
  • Can taste the cherry flavor.

Not a Fan of the Flavors Below

Double Chocolate

  • I wanted to love this one since it was a favorite in the old formula, but its just too much chocolate – words I never thought Id say.

Salted Caramel

  • Full discosure – my husband was excited by this flavor and ate the bar before I had a chance to try.
  • He says it was a great combo of caramel and chocolate.
  • Sweet – he would consider it a dessert bar.
  • Requested I order more of other flavors instead of this one.

Caramel Brownie

  • This one tastes super artificial.
  • Too sweet for my taste..

German Chocolate Cake (Contains Nuts)

  • I like the taste of the shredded coconut, but that’s about the only thing I like with this bar.
  • One bite and done.

Toffee Almond (Contains Nuts)

  • Nope.
  • Spit it out after first bite.
  • Too sweet.

Chocolate Coconut

  • Taste like an almond joy.
  • Perfect amount of sweetness. Curbs my sweet tooth, but doesn’t have an overpowering taste.
  • I could eat two of these back to back.
  • Tastes amazing out of the freezer and sliced or room temp, sliced and topped with an actual almond.

Raspberry Chocolate Creme

  • The combo of fruit and chocolate is so decadent.
  • Unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. A great intro flavor to Built Bars.

Lemon Chocolate Creme/Orange Chocolate Creme

  • I’m not a fan of citrus and chocolate, but these were my husband and Mom’s favorite. I think this is a great alternative to the chocolate oranges they have at grocery stores near the holidays.
  • I enjoyed both in small quantities so I popped them in the freezer, sliced them up and had a slice at a time.

Black Cherry Chocolate

  • I love the cherry and chocolate combo so I was excited when this one came out. This one is great for a sweet treat for dessert.
  • Mild flavor.

Banana Chocolate Creme

  • I really, really wanted to love this bar, as I LOVE chocolate covered banana slices, but it tastes artificial to me, making it ok, but not something Id order again.
  • However, I should note, I have friends who rave that this is their fave flavor.

Salted Caramel Creme

  • This one was OK. It was very sweet and had almost like a chocolate liquor taste, but I could only handle a bite or two at a time. I should note, I’m not typically a salted caramel fan.

Vanilla Chocolate Creme

This was the only flavor I didn’t enjoy. If you love vanilla, it may be for you, but I wouldn’t recommend someone try this flavor as your first Built Bar experience. To me, it was just that – vanilla.

Now what are you waiting for? Go ahead and try these delicious bars!! I’d love our feedback and to hear which flavor is your favorite!

Built Bars with Nuts (Note: These bars macros are slightly higher than the original line.)

Chocolate Peanut Butter (Contains nuts!)

  • This flavor is good. It reminds me of a Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup.
  • The chocolate coating is thicker than the other flavors.
  • I love slicing these up and popping them in the freezer for a frozen treat to feed my sweet tooth.

Coconut Almond

  • This is similar to the Chocolate coconut cream but with much more texture. I can actually taste the shredded almonds and coconuts. Of the two, I prefer the chocolate coconut, but I also really enjoyed this one.

Banana Nut Bread

  • Yummy! This one taste exactly as I’d hope banana nut bread to taste.
  • Really nice texture. More moist than some other flavors.

Peanut Butter Brownie

  • Theres a lot happening in this bar. It’s good, but pretty sweet. I couldn’t finish the whole bar. It’s a good dessert option, but not a good protein replacement since I couldn’t finish the bar.

Toffee Almond

  • Not a fan. Bitter tasting.
  • I wouldn’t recommend this flavor.

German Chocolate Cake

  • Nice texture, but not a fan of the flavor.
  • I wouldn’t recommend this flavor.

Samoa Bundt Cake

  • I was so excited for this one, but I would not recommend this flavor. It was good at first bite, but had a pretty bad aftertaste a few seconds later. I couldn’t finish the bar. Very bitter.

Caramel Brownie

  • Another flavor I wouldn’t recommend. Bitter aftertaste.

Just tried the Mint Brownie BuiltBar. And it is amazing. I hate that they are only a limited time. Keep them as a regular.

I bought the sample box and have tried only half of them so far. I put them all in the refrigerator.
It took me a while to get used to the texture. I like your description of gooey rather than what I was using –gummy. Now I love vanilla so my favorite so far was the vanilla chocolate creme. I din’t really get much of a fruit taste from the fruity ones. They still satisfied the chocolate craving.

i hate them. i bought two cases for the discount and got six free pumpkin bars. i tried one room temp and one frozen so i have four of those left too. i have a mixed case and a peanut butter case. the company won’t take them back so if anyone wants them, make me an offer and i’ll ship them for free.

    1. Oh no! I’m sorry to hear you don’t like them. Did you try any of the other flavors other than pumpkin? I’m a big fan of pumpkin, but I think chocolate and pumpkin together are very strong. The peanut butter, coconut and raspberry are a few of my favorites.

I found the texture weird at first but have gotten used to it. I have a very hard time telling what flavor I am eating at any given time. Blind fold me so I can’t see the wrapper and I couldn’t tell what flavor that I have. But the chocolate is yummy
